In theaters since Friday, Epic has all the hallmarks of a fun family film including star power (Amanda Seyfried, Colin Farrell, Jason Sudeikis, Christoph Waltz, Beyoncé, Aziz Ansari and more!), humor both parents and kids can enjoy and a heartfelt message.

“The themes are about connections between people and finding things we don’t realize are there,” says director Chris Wedge. “When I walk into the forest, the one thing that I sense is this kind of magical presence. And I was just trying to express that in a fantasy.”

Inspired by William Joyce’s The Leaf Mean and the Brave Good Bugs, the movie was a joint project between Wedge and the author.

“Bill and I are great friends. We started dreaming up an idea and he had just finished his book, so we took that notion that there are leaf men. I just loved having the idea that those guardians were out there.”
