When golfer Dustin Johnson was forced to take a leave of absence from the PGA for personal reasons last year, he probably couldn’t have imagined that just months later, he’d be celebrating a major tournament win and a beautiful newborn baby with fiancée Paulina Gretzky.
Johnson, 30, couldn’t wait to share his Cadillac Championship victory at Trump National Doral with his family on Sunday. As the golfer walked up to sign his winning scorecard, he saw Paulina, 26, holding his 7-week-old son, Tatum, and said, “Now that’s what I wanted to see.”
Johnson credits much of his success to his new role as a father. “From the first day he’s born, your perspective on life completely changes,” he says. “Things that were important aren’t important anymore. He’s the only thing that’s really important.”
Having his life turned upside down by a newborn may have been just the shake-up the golfer needed. “It makes life a lot easier, I think, just because there’s just one thing that’s all you think about. It definitely simplifies stuff,” Johnson explains.
Paulina, the daughter of hockey great Wayne Gretzky, says of Johnson’s comeback win, “It’s just unbelievable. Dustin’s the best dad, he’s my best friend. He’s been so supportive with me and we’re just there for each other. I couldn’t be happier for him.”
