Odette Annable on 'Fiery' Daughter Charlie: 'I've Always Liked Boy Names for Girls'

The actress opens up to PEOPLE about her new life as a mom

Odette Annable is opening up about her new life as a mom, and explaining the meaning behind her 3-month-old daughter’s unique name: Charlie Mae.

“I’ve always liked boy names for girls and we love the balance between Charlie and Mae,” Odette told PEOPLE at the 2015 March of Dimes Celebration of Babies Luncheon.

She adds, “It feels a little more feminine, so that you know she is a little girl.”

Joined by her husband, actor Dave Annable, at the Beverly Wiltshire Hotel event, Odette said first-time motherhood has been “fantastic and emotional and tiring.”

“Charlie is a sweet little baby,” she shares, adding, “her personality is starting to show. She’s got her temper like her mother, a little fiery Cuban. She’s just really great. She’s a great sleeper, which is fantastic for us.”

Dave is enjoying the daddy-daughter experience he’s had with Charlie since her September birth.

“I love it until she’s about 14, I’m sure,” he jokes. “But right now, obviously being here, we’re lucky that we have a healthy baby — knock on wood — so we’re happy. It’s tough work, but it’s rewarding work.”

The Red Band Society star says he feels as if he’s part of an “exclusive club of parents” that understand the hardships of raising children.

As for bouncing back to her pre-baby body, Odette has been taking a “wonderful pre-natal yoga class and it’s also for postpartum,” she shares.

“I’ve made my way to that treadmill a couple times and I’m watching Project Greenlight — it distracts me from the actual workout, so it’s a win-win for me,” she admits.

“I’m slowly, but surely getting back into it. I took a little time off just because, why not? I had a baby and I wanted to enjoy her, and sleep was the most important thing for me beside taking care of my child and my husband.”
