Chris Noth: Baby Time Is 'Very Fulfilling, Very Amazing'

The Sex and the City star says he's taking fatherhood one day at a time

Mr. Big is Mr. Busy these days, settling into first-time fatherhood – at age 53.

And when it comes to being a new dad, Chris Noth says he’s taking the challenges as they come. “I don’t like to get ahead of myself too much, really,” the Sex and the City star told PEOPLE Sunday at the 16th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar Viewing Party in West Hollywood. “[I] really take it moment by moment.”

Noth’s longtime girlfriend, Tara Wilson, gave birth to their son, Orion Christopher, in January.

“Being with him is very fulfilling, very amazing,” Noth said. As for late-night feedings and diaper changes, he added, “We’re getting some help, but we’re dealing with it!”

For the New York-based actor – who returns to the big screen May 30 in Sex and the City: The Movie, opposite Sarah Jessica Parker – Oscar night provided the opportunity for a rare date night. The couple has been hunkered down with “baby stuff,” Wilson told PEOPLE.

“She was glad to get out tonight in a nice dress,” Noth said, smiling at Wilson. “I had to go down to the dry cleaners and get her dress for today, and [it was] lost! I was there for about an hour and thought we may not make it tonight. We were glad to be able to get out.”
