Happy #BumpDay! The social campaign, which launches its inaugural call-to-auction Wednesday, aims to promote awareness of the challenges that expectant moms all over the world face throughout their pregnancy.
Backed up by WhatToExpect.com, International Medical Corps, 1,000 Days, and the United Nations Foundation, Bump Day was created in an effort to start a conversation about the steps that need to be taken to ensure healthy motherhood.
“Clearly, there is no more pressing global issue affecting our entire future than the health of pregnant women around the world,” Heidi Murkoff, author of the What to Expect series, writes in a blog for Huffington Post. “Yet, unbelievably, there is no single day devoted to it.”
She cites a startling statistic: Every day around the world (which includes the United States) close to 800 women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.
One quick scan of the hashtag on Twitter and Instagram shows a photo stream of expectant moms with burgeoning bellies, as well as messages from individuals who aren’t expecting but are just as supportive of the cause.
“There’s nothing more beautiful than a baby bump,” Murkoff says. “Except for a baby bump filled with a healthy baby.”
We couldn’t agree more, and neither can these proud moms. Scroll through to see a few of our favorite snapshots, and submit your own using #BumpDay.
