The nature of an actor’s job often means occasional periods of unemployment. While Brian Austin Green was at ease with those dry spells at one point in his career since becoming a father to 6 ½-year-old Kassius Lijah, he admits he feels a new sense of urgency to keep the paychecks rolling in.

He took the role of Derek Reese on Fox’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles because, at least in part, he didn’t have a lot of options. "I wasn’t turning things down, [with] people banging on the door," he jokes in a new interview. "When I was nine and didn’t work for a while, I was OK…Now that I am a father, I am not as comfortable with it." Fortunately, the role is one that the 35-year-old actor instantly loved, because it allows him to showcase his paternal side. As Kassius has grown, so has Brian’s appreciation for fatherhood.

Kassius is Brian’s son with ex-girlfriend Vanessa Marcil.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
