Aurora Shooting Victim's Wife Gives Birth as He Remains in Critical Condition
Caleb Medley may have been in the same hospital as his wife Katie when she gave birth Tuesday, but he never made it to the delivery room to see his son take his first breath. A victim of the Aurora, Colo. theater shooting, Medley instead lay in a medically-induced coma one floor below her.
The couple had gone to the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises last Friday as a way to celebrate their last date before becoming parents, but their plans were cut short when the shooting sent Caleb to the University of Colorado’s intensive care unit, the Huffington Post reports.
Katie Medley, unhurt from the shooting which killed 12 and injured 58, went ahead with her scheduled induced delivery earlier this week – but not before switching to her husband’s hospital in order to be closer to him. She even visited him Tuesday along with their new son, Hugo Jackson Medley, who is 18.5 inches long and weighed in at 7 lbs., 4 oz.
Caleb Medley – an aspiring comic – has undergone three surgeries since the shooting and is “showing signs of improvement,” according to family friend Michael West. Not only is Medley beginning to breathe on his own and squeeze people’s hands, but his heart rate shoots up whenever anyone talks about his son, says West.
The Medleys do not have health insurance, and West is spearheading an online effort to raise money for the couple. Since Katie Medley’s father, David Sanchez, publicly spoke Monday about his daughter’s ordeal, donations to the family have shot up to more than $100,000.
