Angela Simmons‘ new little boy Sutton Joseph is one lucky grandson.

“He’s wonderful. He loves it,” the Growing Up Hip Hop star, 29, told PEOPLE of how her dad Rev. Run, 52, is enjoying being around his 11-week-old grandchild.

She adds of the Run-D.M.C. legend, “Number one, the baby has his middle name — Sutton Joseph Tennyson — my dad’s first name is [Sutton’s] middle name, so it’s a really cool thing.”

The best advice her father has given her about parenthood, she says, is just being the person he is.

“You know what? He just has it. He’s led by example,” she admits.

And when Grandpa isn’t around, Simmons says she’s taking parenting one step at a time.

“I just feel like you have to go day by day, really, with motherhood,” she explains. “It’s all new and I don’t think there’s anything that can really prepare you — you have to step into it.”

Simmons says she was prepared to “be up all night” with Sutton. So what surprises the new mom, who shares her son with fiancé Sutton Tennyson, about being a parent?

“My delivery was surprising — I had a really great pregnancy and a pretty wonderful delivery,” she says. “I was not really sure what to expect ’cause I’ve heard so much — negative things like, you’re scared. It was really good, actually.”

Now that Sutton has made his entrance into the world, is the television star ready to focus on her nuptials?

“It’s still a process because I’m still adjusting to motherhood, and then trying to plan the wedding at the same time … it’s a whole lot,” she says.
