How Ellen DeGeneres Helped Adam Levine Name Daughter Dusty Rose: 'I Did Not Know That Was a Color'
"If anyone needs to name their child, Ellen's really good at it," Adam Levine said on Ellen DeGeneres' show Wednesday
Adam Levine certainly has impressive chops in songwriting. But when it came to choosing a moniker for his little girl Dusty Rose, he admits he needed to call in for backup.
“The name game is a tough game,” the Maroon 5 frontman and The Voice coach, 37, told Ellen DeGeneres of his now 6-week-old daughter when he stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show Wednesday. “Imagine you’re writing the best song you’ve ever written in your life and you have to name it — it’s really screwed up to have to actually have to put yourself through that.”
Levine doesn’t reveal what his first choice of a name was, but he does confess DeGeneres herself — who admits she is regularly “jonesing for a baby picture” from the new dad — shot it down quickly when prodded for advice.
“So I’m going through it and I think I have a great name, and I texted Ellen,” he continues. “And I was like, ‘What do you think?’ and she’s like, ‘I hate it, I think it’s a terrible name.’ ”

The host didn’t leave the then-dad-to-be hanging, though.
“She gave me like five names to think about, like, ‘This, this, this, this’ — Dusty was in there,” Levine says, telling DeGeneres, “So you basically named my kid.”
The singer admits his wife, Victoria’s Secret Angel Behati Prinsloo, wasn’t on board at first, but that she eventually came around.
“My wife she’s like, “Mmm, I don’t like it,’ ” Levine says of Prinsloo, 27. “And I’m like, ‘Okay, cool.’ Then I brought it back to her in the 11th hour and I’m like, ‘Dusty’s pretty cool … ‘ and she’s like, ‘I love it.’ ”

“And Dusty Rose, too,” DeGeneres says, pointing out, “It’s a beautiful color, as well.”
“I did not know that was a color, by the way,” the new dad says.
“That’s how I thought of it,” the host replies. “I had already thought of Dusty and then someone said ‘Dusty Rose.’ I said, ‘Oh, that’s her name,’ and so I texted you, ‘Dusty Rose.’ ”
“Yeah, so basically, she named my kid,” Levine addresses the audience. “If anyone needs to name their child, Ellen’s really good at it.”
