Tom Petty's Widow and Daughters Engaged in Legal Feud Over Late Rocker's Songs

Dana Petty alleges that the rocker's daughters from a previous marriage, Adria and Annakim, are trying to force her out of managing the estate

The widow of Tom Petty has filed legal documents claiming that the late musician’s daughters from a previous marriage are preventing her from properly managing his music. Furthermore, Dana Petty alleges that Petty’s daughters, Adria and Annakim, are trying to force her out of overseeing his estate.

According to documents obtained by PEOPLE and first reported by TMZ and The Blast, Dana requests that the court require a consensus between the three members of Petty’s family for all “significant decisions.”

She also asks the court to execute an operating agreement to appoint a manager to oversee day-to-day matters alongside herself and Petty’s daughters. The figure would effectively act as a mediator, as Dana, 55, claims in the documents that relations between the camps have broken down despite going “above and beyond to seek to work cooperatively with Tom’s daughters.”

The papers cite Adria, 44, as being particularly difficult to work with, saying she demonstrated “resentment over their father’s love of Petitioner and her role in his life.”

In addition to claims of abuse towards herself, business and legal representatives, and members of Petty’s band, the Heartbreakers, Dana claims that Adria’s “erratic behavior has made it exceedingly — and increasingly — difficult to carry on business and has threatened the Trust’s business dealings and important relationships with the Heartbreakers, Tom’s record labels (which are critical to the ongoing success of the franchise), and Tom’s longstanding management team.”

She goes on to cite specific instances, claiming that both daughters dragged their feet over a potential greatest hits compilation, and rejected a million-dollar offer to release an expanded 25th-anniversary edition of the album Wildflowers without consulting her.

Also, she claims Adria hired a manager named Larry Jenkins without permission. Ironically, Dana developed a strong working relationship with Jenkins when he reportedly refused to acquiesce to Petty’s daughter’s demands. She requests that he be made a formal manager under a new operating agreement.

“Adria and Annakim vetoed and overrode virtually every decision Petitioner, Mr. Jenkins, and the record company had already made, at great financial cost,” she says in the documents.

Adria fired back with a legal motion of her own, also obtained by PEOPLE, in which she claims that Petty’s will required that all three family members “participate equally in the management of the Artistic Property Entity.”

In the claim, Adria requests that the court transfer her father’s music to a separate trust — as is stipulated in Petty’s will — in an effort for her and her sister to have an equal say over the management. To date, a judge has yet to rule on the matter.

Petty suffered an apparent cardiac arrest at his Los Angeles home on Oct. 2, 2017. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died that day at the age of 66.

In January 2018, it was revealed that Petty died of an accidental drug overdose.

In a statement posted on the late singer’s website, his family said the singer had been using a number of medications, including opioid pain medication fentanyl.
