Singer-songwriter Sevyn Streeter, 30, is one of the most exciting faces in R&B right now. You may recognize the Florida native, who is preparing to release her debut album next year, as the writer behind some of the biggest tracks to top the charts.
Streeter spoke with PEOPLE NOW about her biggest inspirations in music, her latest music video and what’s coming up next. Here’s what you need to know about the “Prolly” singer:
1. She’s a Grammy winner.
“I have to say one of my favorite songs that I wrote was ‘The Way’ by Ariana Grande,” says Sevyn. The hit record featuring Mac Miller made it to No. 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
2. She’s influenced by some of music’s biggest legends.
Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston are some of Sevyn’s biggest sources of inspiration, and she says that each of these artists has influenced her in some way.
“Whether it was Janet in the way she moves or Whitney and the way that she would belt out these amazing records. Or just Mariah and her high notes and Aretha and her soul,” explains Sevyn. “I can go on for days.”
3. She has a new music video called “Prolly.”
Sevyn just dropped her new music video for her track “Prolly,” featuring Gucci Mane. She also released her new song titled “My Love for You,” which she says talks about “celebrating the type of love that you deserve.”
4. Her name was originally spelt “Se7en.”
“Why did I change it? Because somebody else had that name,” she explains.
The number holds a special significance to Sevyn because she was born on July 7— the seventh day of the seventh month of the year.
5. She has a new album called Girl Disrupted, out in 2017.
Look out for Girl Disrupted, set to be released in early 2017. As for the inspiration behind the album’s name, Sevyn says, “I was going through a phase in my life where I was looking at the world in a naïve way. Now I’m a confident young woman so the girl in me has been disrupted.”
