From the Disney Days to 'Bad Liar': The Evolution of Selena Gomez, in Photos
Gomez's first role was on Barney and Friends, and, yes, she is the cutest little girl we've ever seen.
She later made an appearance The Suite Life of Zack & Cody (and got a kiss out of it!), as well as Hannah Montana, as pop star Mikayla.
FINALLY A WIZARD
In 2007, Gomez reached mainstream success with Wizards of Waverly Place, in which she played a teenage girl who just so happens to be a wizard – NBD – but still has the same problems as the rest of us. It was when we first really met (and became obsessed) with her.
THE ORIGINAL SQUAD
AND THE SCENE
Like most other Disney stars, Gomez crossed over into the music industry, too, forming pop-rock band Selena Gomez & The Scene.
A RISING STAR
Gomez balanced both her band and her TV show until 2012. Oh, and she was quickly becoming a red carpet pro!
During this time, she would also become friends with Justin Bieber – and they soon began one of the great romances of our time. Sure, we loved Selena, and we loved Justin, but we couldn't help but love them even more when they were Jelena (even if it couldn't last forever, we'll always cherish the time we had).
The year 2012 brought a time of change for Gomez. Wizards eventually ended, and she took a break from music to focus on the big screen in films like Monte Carlo, Hotel Transylvania and Spring Breakers. She started rocking a bolder look, and we were all like, wait, this girl is pure fire.
Thankfully, Gomez couldn't stay away from music for long and transformed into the singer we know today (minus The Scene – sorry guys). In 2013, she released her first solo album: Stars Dance. In 2014, she and Bieber broke up for good, and we were sad, but it was okay, because this is a strong, independent woman we're talking about here.
GOOD FOR YOU
By 2015, we were bowing down to Queen Gomez. She was collaborating with stars like Zedd, became the face of Pantene and released her second album, Revival. And with songs like "Good for You" and "Hands to Myself," it was clear this wasn't the little Disney darling we first met.
ON A ROLL
THIS IS MY REVIVAL
In 2016, Gomez killed it on her Revival tour (while whipping her hair like it's nobody's business), her second solo concert tour. She also took a break from the spotlight, returning at the November American Music Awards and giving an inspiring speech to fans.
“I think it’s safe to say that most of you know a lot of my life, whether I like it or not. I had to stop, ’cause I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside,” said Gomez, tearing up. “I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down. All I can say from the bottom of my heart is I am so grateful I have the opportunity to share what I love with people that I love, and I have to say thank you so much to my fans because you guys are so damn loyal and I don’t know what I did to deserve you.”
A WHOLE NEW SELENA
The year 2017 has brought lots of change for the starlet, including a new boyfriend in The Weeknd, and in May, a new single, "Bad Liar." We can't wait to see what's next.
