One Direction: Where Are They Now?
With solo careers, engagements and babies on the way, the One Direction boys have come a long way since their days on The X Factor
One Direction: Then & Now
After stealing the spotlight and our hearts on The X-Factor in 2010, One Direction skyrocketed to superstardom. For years, the boy band narrated the soundtrack to the story of my life, serving up four studio albums together.
But the night changes, and so do band dynamics: Zayn Malik left the group in March 2015, and Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson released one more record together before announcing that they’d be taking an extended hiatus. Less than a year later, they confirmed that they were all going their separate ways for good. Here’s what the boys have been up to since.
The "Strip That Down" singer is engaged, a rep confirmed to PEOPLE on Aug. 28. Payne and his now fiancée, model Maya Henry, were spotted out and about in London where Henry was seen wearing a massive diamond ring.
The pair were first romantically linked in August 2018, following his split from ex-girlfriend Cheryl in July of that year. Payne and the English singer, who first began dating in late 2015, share 3-year-old son Bear Grey.
Payne released his first solo EP, First Time, in 2018, followed by his debut studio album, LP1, the following year.
Oh Harry, how we adore you! Styles’ self-titled debut album topped the charts after its 2017 release, and that same year the singer also made his silver screen debut in Dunkirk. In 2019 he returned with his second album Fine Line, which ultimately delivered one of the songs and music videos of the summer 2020, “Watermelon Sugar.”
While Styles has kept his love life largely private through the years, he and Kendall Jenner have made headlines with their long-rumored on-and-off relationship through the years.
Malik is soon to be a first time dad! The “Pillowtalk” singer is expecting his first child with longtime love Gigi Hadid, who he has been dating on and off since November 2015. Malik had previously been engaged to Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards, breaking off their relationship three months earlier.
As the first to leave the band in 2015, Malik set out to “be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.” He’s since released two solo albums: 2016’s Mind of Mine, and 2018’s Icarus Falls.
The oldest member of the boy band was also the first to become a father, welcoming his first child, son Freddie Reign, in January 2016 with ex Briana Jungwirth. In 2017 he released two singles, “Back to You” and “Just Like You,” before returning to The X Factor as a judge on season 15. In 2020, Tomlinson released his debut solo album, Walls.
In the years since the band split, the singer has faced a number of family tragedies, first losing his mother in December 2016 and later his 18-year-old sister Félicité in March 2019.
The Irish singer has enjoyed a successful solo career, starting off with his album Flicker — which blessed us with his single “Slow Hands” — in 2017. Late last year, he teased his sophomore album, Heartbreak Weather, with the lead single “Nice to Meet Ya.” On the romance front, he and singer Hailee Steinfeld were romantically linked in February 2018, but PEOPLE confirmed the couple’s breakup in December of that year.
