The music world is mourning rapper Nipsey Hussle, who was shot and killed on Sunday at the age of 33.
Drake, Rihanna, John Legend, Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Snoop Dogg, Wiz Kalifa, Sean “Diddy” Combs, The Game, 21 Savage, Chance the Rapper, Meek Mill, Pharrell Williams, 50 Cent, Ludacris, Tyga and Keri Hilson were just a few of the names remembering the late star.
“This doesn’t make any sense!” Rihanna tweeted, captioning a series of photos of Hussle — including one of he and his daughter on the red carpet at the 2019 GRAMMY Awards. “My spirit is shaken by this! Dear God may His spirit Rest In Peace and May You grant divine comfort to all his loved ones! 💔🙏🏿 I’m so sorry this happened to you @nipseyhussle.”
“I just spent Thursday with him filming a video for a beautiful new song we created with Khaled,” a shocked Legend wrote on Twitter. “We filmed in Inglewood, close to where he grew up. He was so gifted, so proud of his home, so invested in his community. Utterly stunned that he’s gone so soon.”
Said Drake on Instagram: “F—. My whole energy is just at a low right now hearing this. We just linked for the first time in years and said we were gonna do a new song this summer cause it had been too long. You were having the best run and I was so happy watching from distance fam nobody ever talks down on your name you were a real one to your people and to the rest of us. I’m only doing this here cause I want the world to know I saw you as a man of respect and a don. Rest easy my g.”
“You took that Victory Lap here on earth…spreading knowledge, truth, sparking inspiration…creating opportunity & advancing our community and its youth’s minds in your music and most importantly—outside of it. You took it upon your shoulders and walked your talk. Now it’s time we carry the torch for you in this Marathon of cyclical damage you were living to undo,” Hilson wrote on Instagram. “You are a legend, and we will never forget your affect.”
Both Snoop Dogg and Diddy shared a series of videos from their time with Hussle on Instagram.
“I laugh to keep from crying 😢” Snoop captioned one of the many videos of the two he posted. “Miss u lil bro. You were always ahead of the game 🕊 Heaven need you more than we do. Thank you for all the good times loco 💙.”
He shared prayers to Hussle’s family in one emotional clip. “It’s f—ed up, man. This is f—ed up,” said Snoop in the clip, his face obscured. “This s— got to stop, man.”
“Wow. I don’t even know what to say,” Diddy said. “I’m confused. Nipsey and I had just started really getting to know each other. I feel honored to have worked on his project. Nipsey represents change, he represents evolution, he represents everything our culture needs to embrace. Black ownership. Black love. Black wealth. God bless you and your family King. @laurenlondon whatever you need we are here for you. My family is your family.”
Other stars outside of the music industry also sent their love, including Idris Elba, LeBron James, Jada Pinkett Smith and more.
Hussle is survived by his two children: daughter Emani from a previous relationship and son Kross, 2, with his girlfriend, actress Lauren London, 34.
The “Hussle & Motivate” musician (né Ermias Asghedom) died after being shot on the street where his clothing store, the Marathon Clothing Company, is located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, NBC News, the Los Angeles Times and TMZ reported, citing multiple law enforcement sources.
Two other victims were involved in the shooting, authorities say.
“Right around 3:20 this afternoon, there was a shooting that occurred at the 3400 block of West Slauson Avenue,” a public information officer with the Los Angeles Police Department told PEOPLE. “Three individuals, three victims were shot. They were taken to a local hospital. One of those victims died at the local hospital, the other two are listed in stable condition.”
The PIO added: “The subject responsible for the shooting fled in some type of vehicle, but I do not have the information of the type of vehicle he fled in.” The officer said that the South Bureau Homicide team is investigating the incident.
Over the years, Hussle has dropped several mixtapes and worked with JAY-Z. Victory Lap, which is both his debut album and his last album to be released during his lifetime, was nominated for best rap album at the Grammy Awards in February.
“I’ve gotten it from young artists and young hustlers, like, ‘Nip man, I was really inspired by this move you did and I got my own version of that, me and my team,’” he told Complex in February. “That’s what it’s about. Adding something to the game that people can take from.”
“More than a lot of the things that we considered a success,” he continued. “I know in my heart that it’s a higher power and a higher value to what we can do. The times we do it right and it connects and it has that effect on people; that’s really, really fulfilling.”
