The 46-year-old Grammy winner made a festive appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday, where she opened up about the breakup while discussing her new E! docu-series Mariah’s World. The show, premiering Dec. 4, features Packer prominently despite Carey saying he “allegedly” didn’t want to be in it. It even documents Carey trying on wedding dresses. Their relationship appeared to cast a cloud over the show for Carey. “Now it’s a whole friggin’ thing,” she said. Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Asked how she was doing mentally, Carey hesitated before explaining, “I think I’m doing well.” “Everything happens for a reason,” she revealed. “Things are the way they are.” She added: “It’s kind of difficult to talk about it at the moment. After going public with their romance a year later in June 2015, they made it red carpet official months later at The Intern premiere in New York City. Though it appears to be business as usual for Carey after the split, sources told PEOPLE that she’s still reeling from her broken engagement. “First the split didn’t seem to faze Mariah. It was like she expected things to be fine soon,” the insider explained. “Now she realizes that things aren’t fine and not being with James makes her depressed. She is very hurt that he dumped her.” Work commitments have kept her mind busy as “[Mariah] doesn’t want to sit at home and dwell on it.” Michael Rozman/Warner Bros. Elsewhere in her Ellen appearance, Carey — who showed up in a red silk robe before taking it off and revealing a sleek black outfit — talked about her perpetual lateness. “I really try, and half the time it’s not my fault,” she said. “I’m telling the truth. It used to be my fault, and then I told everybody, ‘Just lie to me and tell me that the call is earlier, so I’ll be there on time.’ ” The Ellen DeGeneres Show airs weekdays in syndication.
