Mariah Carey on Her Split From Fiancé James Packer: 'Everything Happens for a Reason'

Mariah Carey made a festive appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday, where she opened up about her breakup from James Packer while discussing her new E! docu-series Mariah's World.

Mariah Carey is speaking out about her recent split from fiancé James Packer.

The 46-year-old Grammy winner made a festive appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday, where she opened up about the breakup while discussing her new E! docu-series Mariah’s World.

The show, premiering Dec. 4, features Packer prominently despite Carey saying he “allegedly” didn’t want to be in it. It even documents Carey trying on wedding dresses.

Their relationship appeared to cast a cloud over the show for Carey. “Now it’s a whole friggin’ thing,” she said.

Asked how she was doing mentally, Carey hesitated before explaining, “I think I’m doing well.”

“Everything happens for a reason,” she revealed. “Things are the way they are.”

She added: “It’s kind of difficult to talk about it at the moment. So I’m just going to compliment you on these decorations once again because they are fabulous and I’m here…”

Carey and Packer, 49, first met in Aspen, Colorado in 2014 after mutual friend Brett Ratner introduced them to each other at the Hercules premiere. After going public with their romance a year later in June 2015, they made it red carpet official months later at The Intern premiere in New York City. Then earlier this year, the billionaire businessman proposed in her hometown of New York City on Jan. 21.

Though it appears to be business as usual for Carey after the split, sources told PEOPLE that she’s still reeling from her broken engagement.

“First the split didn’t seem to faze Mariah. It was like she expected things to be fine soon,” the insider explained. “Now she realizes that things aren’t fine and not being with James makes her depressed. She is very hurt that he dumped her.”

Work commitments have kept her mind busy as “[Mariah] doesn’t want to sit at home and dwell on it.”

Elsewhere in her Ellen appearance, Carey — who showed up in a red silk robe before taking it off and revealing a sleek black outfit — talked about her perpetual lateness.

“I really try, and half the time it’s not my fault,” she said. “I’m telling the truth. It used to be my fault, and then I told everybody, ‘Just lie to me and tell me that the call is earlier, so I’ll be there on time.’ ”
