Inside Mariah Carey and James Packer's Relationship: From Early Sizzle to the Final Fizzle
Things have officially blown up between Mariah Carey and now ex-fiancé James Packer, but what lead the former couple from engagement bliss to a war of words?
PEOPLE confirmed the couple’s split on Thursday, with intel that the pop diva, 46, and the Aussie billionaire, 49, weren’t necessarily done for good. News that the breakup was seemingly temporary was quickly squashed, however, with a Packer source telling PEOPLE that they are never, ever, ever getting back together.
Before things turn ugly, look back on every moment of the high-profile pair’s relationship — and their final months as a happy couple.
2014: The first meeting
Big-wig Hollywood producer Brett Ratner played matchmaker of sorts when he invited Carey to the 2014 premiere of action film Hercules: the red carpet shindig is how the pop star and Packer first met.
On The Steve Harvey Show earlier this year, Carey revealed, “We first met in Aspen. A couple years ago we were at the Hercules premiere. We were talking and laughing and people were getting mad at us and stuff like that. So we hit it off.”
June 19, 2015: The public debut
Carey and the media mogul introduced their love to the world last June, stepping out in Capri hand-in-hand.
A source told PEOPLE a few days later that the duo are “enjoying spending time with each other.”
The singer’s twins with ex Nick Cannon, Monroe and Moroccan, now 5½, were along for the special Mediterranean trek, as well as Packer’s own three young children. Later, the whole group traveled to Portofino, Italy, and Israel.
According to a Packer source, the “brand new” relationship was “bubbling for a couple of months.”

July 22, 2015: Mariah is smitten
Life imitating art: Carey chose to dedicate one of her most emotional hits, “Hero,” to her new beau while performing at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in July.
“I’ve got a new heart,” Carey told her Las Vegas residency audience. “James is in the house.”
Sept. 21, 2015: The red carpet debut
The pair made it red carpet official just over a year ago at The Intern premiere in New York City, walking in front of the cameras with the media mogul’s hand cradling Carey’s back.
In the months that followed, Carey wasn’t shy about sharing the spotlight with Packer: she held his hand at the grand opening of his new Studio City resort in Macau, China, last October.
Dec. 2, 2016: Ex approval
As Carey and Packer made headlines, her ex Cannon noticed — and gave the pair a thumbs up.
Cannon told Howard Stern in December that it was “awesome” she’d found Packer, adding, “As long as she’s happy and my children are happy, I’m happy. We hang out all the time.”
The former couple are known to get together for the sake of their children, and spent Thanksgiving as a family of four that year. Cannon even told Stern that he “wanted” Packer to be there, even though the latter had skipped out.
“What’s most important is they’re doing it right when it comes to their kids,” a source tells PEOPLE. “What star couple do you know that still spends every holiday together? It’s all about ‘dem babies.”
Dec. 22, 2015: Ski bunnies
The couple marked a new milestone in Aspen, Colorado, last Christmas: their first holiday season as a unit.
Monroe and Moroccan were on hand, once again, for the special trip — filled with Christmas jammies and gold one-pieces — which Carey documented through social media.
In the midst of bonding with her children, Carey made time to create new memories with Packer in the same town where they met.
Jan. 21, 2016: He put a ring on it
Not long after their winter wonderland getaway, Packer and Carey made it official. The businessman proposed in her hometown of New York City on Jan. 21, giving Carey a massive 35 carat Wilfredo Rosado-designed ring.
The marriage would have been Carey’s third (she was also wed to music executive Tommy Mottola, in addition to Cannon), and Packer’s second — he shares his children with ex Erica Baxter.
Shortly after the engagement, a Carey friend told PEOPLE Packer “is powerful and successful and that is attractive to her. Mariah is someone who likes to be taken care of.”
“It’s a match made in heaven because he’s unafraid of an alpha woman,” added an insider. “He’s an alpha male.”
April 2016: Keeping the romance alive on the road
While Carey jetted around Europe for her “Sweet Sweet Fantasy” tour, Packer was never far from her heart. At one point, he even made a sweet “#surprise visit” to Milan, where the diva was gearing up for her performance at the Mediolanum Forum.
May 30, 2016: Wedding planning
Carey was quick to start wedding planning — but wouldn’t reveal much about the likely lavish nuptials.
“I can’t really talk about them right now because everything is still being figured out,” she teased, adding, “I never said it was gonna be a big wedding.”
July 2016: Setting sail in the summertime
The couple returned to the sea for some summer fun in July, boarding Packer’s luxury yacht to cruise the French Riviera.
Sept. 23, 2016: The now-infamous Greece vacation
Packer and Carey were last photographed together in Mykonos, Greece, in late September — the site of their relationship breakdown and breakup.
A rep for Carey confirmed to PEOPLE that the pair’s Greece vacation took a turn for the worse. His rep further told Entertainment Tonight in a statement, “Mariah and James had a fight in Greece, and have not seen each other since. The fight was not because of any cheating allegations or excessive spending by Mariah.”
Oct. 22, 2016: Reunited with her ex
Cannon returned to Carey’s life, once again, over the weekend for her Halloween bash. The 36-year-old and his son dressed as the Super Mario Brothers, while Carey dressed as a devil and Monroe as Rapunzel from Disney’s 2010 film Tangled.
The whole gang posed together for a photo — but Packer was nowhere in sight.
Oct. 27, 2016: And now, the end is here
On Thursday, PEOPLE confirmed that Carey and Packer had been broken up for a month, but a source close to the latter suggested that a reunion was not out of the question, revealing, “James needed a break.”
After the news, Carey stepped out with her friends at Nobu in Malibu, still wearing her $10 million ring.
According to a source, the singer “was with a group of friends. She had fun and sipped champagne. She was very dressed up, wore her engagement ring and seemed in a great mood. She wanted to show James that she isn’t sitting at home crying. She doesn’t seem too concerned.”
Oct. 28, 2016: It’s a he-said, she-said
In the past 24 hours though, accusations have been flying from both parties, with a source close to Carey telling PEOPLE that the split was directly related to the mogul’s mental health.
“James has not been in a mentally healthy place,” the source said. “His behavior was not a desirable situation for Mariah so she unfortunately had to leave him.”
A source on the Packer side refuted the allegations, however, telling PEOPLE that it’s “typical Mariah to just twist things that don’t sound good to her. They split because she has issues. James is definitely an oddball, but a brilliant great guy. To put her issues on James is ridiculous.”
“James is very private, and doesn’t need the media to be successful,” the Packer source said. “He doesn’t want to be a part of Mariah’s reality show.”
