Louis Tomlinson Goes Out with One Direction Bandmates After Emotional X Factor Performance
On Wednesday, Tomlinson’s mom Johanna Deakin died from leukemia.
“Johannah was first and foremost a truly amazing mother to seven children – Louis, Lottie, Félicité, and two sets of twins, Phoebe and Daisy and Ernest and Doris — whose individual talents and success are testament to the principles and beliefs she instilled in them,” Deakin’s husband Dan Deakin said in a statement on Friday. “She was also an incredibly proud grandmother to [Louis’ son] Freddie.”
One of Deakin’s final wishes was that her son would perform on The X Factor on Saturday night.
According to a source, Deakin, a midwife, had been looking forward to Tomlinson’s appearance on the stage where he first found fame with his One Direction band mates — and told PEOPLE that Tomlinson decided to proceed with the appearance in her honor.
Tomlinson and Deakin were extremely close and she was thrilled, a source said, by the birth of his son Freddie Reign in January.
Following his performance, Tomlinson was spotted heading for a night out at London’s Cirque Le Soir alongside his sister Lottie.
Meanwhile, Olympian Sam Quek shared a photo backstage at the X Factor with Harry Styles.
“So… no biggy or anything but this just happened… #1D,” the U.K. field hockey star captioned the post.

After the news broke, Payne shared a lengthy emotional message to his bandmate via Twitter. “Louis, I’m so sorry for you my brother. My heart aches for you. Just know I love you the same from a million miles away as I do right next to you. I’m always here for you through everything as you have been for me. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this incredibly sad time. I can’t begin to imagine what you are all going through. RIP Johanna you are forever in my thoughts.”
Horan also offered his condolences via Twitter. “Very sad news. Louis I love you mate and I’m / all of us are here for you all the way. [Your] mum was an incredible person. Thinking of you and your family. Love from my family to yours.”
He also received a kind message from former 1D-er Zayn Malik, a touching reminder that their friendship remains intact despite their professional split.
As traumatic as this experience has been for Tomlinson, he has found comfort by surrounding himself with family and friends. He took to Twitter shortly after his Saturday performance to share his gratitude.
“Feeling so much love around me and my family,” he wrote. “Mum would have been so f–king proud ( sorry for swearing mum) love you !”
