John Mayer and Katy Perry cozied up over the weekend – but it turns out the exes’ PDA isn’t a sign of rekindling their former fireworks.

On Saturday, the on-off pair attended pals Allison Williams and Ricky Van Veen’s Wyoming nuptials, where they were spotted holding hands and, an onlooker told PEOPLE, looked like they were “back together.” Not the case, says a source.

“They had both agreed to attend the wedding because they are dear friends with the bride and groom, but they are not back together,” a source tells PEOPLE. “It was an emotional wedding, and they held hands but only because they will always care about each other.”

Adds the source: “They are exes that everyone can aspire to be like because they are mature and kind and gracious to each other. They were happy to see each other and spend time together at the wedding, but they are not a couple. They’re both going to go out with other people, and they want each other to be happy.”

Mayer and Perry, 30, split early last year but have been seen out and about since. This summer, they cozied up at the Grateful Dead’s Independence Weekend show in Chicago. And, in January, they joined Williams and Van Veen for a double date at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood.
