Jennifer Lopez Was 'Weary' About Marrying Again: A-Rod Relationship 'Seemed Almost Too Perfect'
Jennifer Lopez said she knew the MLB legend was the one "a year in"
Jennifer Lopez just revealed she had some reservations about getting married again.
The actress-singer and the retired New York Yankee dated for two years before Rodriguez proposed during a romantic vacation in the Bahamas on March 9. But when did she know that he was the one?
“I don’t know, probably…like a year in. A year in. I was just sussin’ it out until then,” Lopez, who just released her new single "Medicine," said with a laugh.
Lopez’s love life — including her three previous marriages and another high-profile engagement — has been tabloid fodder for years. She admits she initially was hesitant in her relationship with Rodriguez.
“[I was] very weary after everything that I’ve been through,” Lopez added. “I was like, ‘I don’t know, maybe yes, maybe no. I really love him, I like him.’ Everything just seemed almost too perfect too soon — so it almost made me a little like, ‘Hey, wait, what’s happening here? Let me just wait a second.'”
Fast forward to last month, when Rodriguez got down on one knee and popped the question.
“When it happened, I think it was the right time,” Lopez added.
The couple began dating on Feb. 3, 2017. From the start, the couple bonded over their love for their families, including Rodriguez’s daughters Natasha, 14, and Ella, 10, (with ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis) and Lopez’s 11-year-old twins Max and Emme (with ex-husband Marc Anthony).
“I couldn’t be happier!” Lopez added on the radio show. “It’s great to have a best friend and a partner that you can really build with, and I just feel like with Alex and I, that’s what it’s like. We’re both really similar. It was just like, having somebody who understands you from the inside, as far as like: I really love what I do, and I really want to work hard at it and understand that. It doesn’t mean that I don’t love you, we love each other, but we’re doing this together.”
Lopez added: “You need a like-minded person who is trying to be the best they can be and always trying to grow, and then they help you grow, and you help them grow. … Together we make each other better.”
Indeed, as a source told PEOPLE following their engagement: “They are incredible together. Very much soulmates that bring out the best in each other and are so supportive of each other.”
