Grace VanderWaal Talks About Getting Real with Her Fans on Social Media

Grace VanderWaal's album "Just the Beginning" drops on Nov. 3

Grace VanderWaal really has talent when it comes to taking her own life experiences and spinning them into songs that are relatable to others.

The season 11 America’s Got Talent winner sat down with PEOPLE Now to chat about the inspiration behind her new album when she revealed “most of my songs never happened to me.”

“I’ve never been in love, I’ve never, you know, sneaked out and did crazy, rebellious things,” she opens up about just some of the topics she touches on in her new album Just the Beginning, which drops Friday.

She adds, “I take experiences that I’ve had and make up a story to them that translates the exact same emotion. I did that all throughout the album.”

But the young starlet is inspiring her fans in many more forms than just music. In September, VanderWaal took to social media to share an untouched, makeup-free selfie with “pimples and acne on my face” to encourage others to love themselves in their natural state.

“My sister used to have a lot of beauty confidence and body confidence issues. [I was] on my homepage of Instagram and it was full of eyebrow goals, eyelash goals, boyfriend goals, feet goals — everything goals! Literally, ear goals, nose goals — everything,” she says.

She continues, “She’s like, ‘You know, Grace, you should really unfollow all of that. I used to look at all that and follow all that and it’s just really not good for you,’ and I was like, ‘Jeez, I’ve never thought of it that way.’ It was actually subconsciously in my mind. I was like, ‘You’ve just inspired me!’ so I unfollowed all of them.”
