Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich's Relationship Timeline: From Flirty Comments and Engagement to Sudden Breakup
The singer and actor, who got engaged in July, called it quits in late September after being together for nearly seven months
Flirty on Instagram
In March, PEOPLE confirmed that the “I Love Me” singer, 27, and the actor, 28, were dating after the two openly flirted on Instagram for several weeks.
“when u realize u should’ve packed more for your quarantine stay 😅🤦♂️ have a blessed Monday filled with health, happiness, safety, joy, love, & laughter <3,” he captioned a steamy photo.
Lovato quickly responded in his comments, writing: “Fine by me…”
Love in Quarantine
The whirlwind romance was born at the start of the pandemic.
"We were able to share this time together that we wouldn't have normally gotten to spend. And that accelerated our relationship on a level that you can't really explain to people," she told The Morning Mash Up on SiriusXM Hits 1 about their love-filled summer, "but quarantine either makes or breaks the deal. And it really made that."
"I'm really blessed, really fortunate and continuing to count my blessings every day," she added.
Will You Marry Me?
Ehrich popped the question to Lovato in late July on a romantic beachside proposal in Malibu — just four months after they started dating.
"I knew I loved you the moment I met you," Lovato captioned photos of the big day on Instagram. "It was something I can't describe to anyone who hasn’t experienced it firsthand but luckily you did too."
"I've never felt so unconditionally loved by someone in my life (other than my parents) flaws and all," she added.
A Supportive Man
"Don't mind me — just still reprogramming my thinking around body image with the most loving fiancé @maxehrich," she wrote on her Instagram story.
Happy Birthday, Demi!
For Lovato's 28th birthday, Ehrich had a sweet message for his fiancée.
"words fall short baby," Ehrich wrote. "you light up this world & i am the luckiest man alive to call you my fiancé."
"i keep falling more in love with you & your pure heart & soul every moment," he added.
Six Months Together
In early September, the couple celebrated their first six months together.
"Happy 6 months to my darling, the best father these pups could ever ask for," Lovato wrote on her Instagram story along with a small clip of the two. "I love you BEYOND. Thank you for making my life so much better @maxehrich 💖💖💖 I love you baby 💞💞💞."
"Words fall short, baby. Love you infinitely & then some. Thank you for being the light of my life. ❤️ Cheers to forever 💍," Ehrich wrote, reposting the same video.
Calling Out Haters
"It's really sad when people FAKE images to put women against each other. If women have conflict that's between them NOT YOU," wrote Lovato, before adding, "If you aren't 13 years old trying to grasp the reality of right now, put on your adult underpants and write about what actually matters. Please."
A Sudden Split
The couple called it quits just two months after their engagement, a source confirmed to PEOPLE.
"It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers," the source said. "They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together."
Multiple sources told PEOPLE the two were having "conflicts" weeks ahead of the breakup.
"Max shot up in fame, and it's been hard," one insider said. "He got wrapped up in [Hollywood]."
