Cody Simpson and The Tide have just released their first single of the year.

“We Had,” written by Simpson, was inspired by the nostalgia of love and loss. “The song is about lost love,” Simpson tells PEOPLE exclusively. “A peaceful nostalgia that occurs as time passes.”

The 21-year-old musician released the acoustic track — a more melancholy and reflective tone than his usual upbeat pop — as a follow-up to his trio’s previous EPs Wave One (2017) and Wave Two (2018).

Simpson speaks his truth throughout the song, acknowledging the nostalgia he feels towards lost love, and describes this transformative shift as “a moment of clarity and personal honesty.”

As for the inspiration behind the lyrics, Simpson says “[they’re] a positive take on the idea that you can look back and be glad about a relationship that affected your life deeply but ultimately ended.”

“I wrote it in a camper van up in Malibu on a cliff at night time,” Simpson says about his unique writing process for this single. “I jotted the song down in about 10 minutes.”

It has been a long journey from his first single, ‘IYiYiY’ feat. Flo Rida, that was released in 2010. After almost a decade in the spotlight, the singer has grown both as a performer and an individual.

Beyond singing, Simpson is currently starring in his debut Broadway musical as Dmitry in Anastasia.

As a vocal proponent of environmental responsibility, Simpson was also recently named the first United Nations Development Programme advocate. Cody Simpson and The Tide reflects the concepts of unity, ocean conservation and environmental protection.

On March 24, Cody Simpson and The Tide will be performing at the Mercury Lounge in New York City.
