Everything to Know About BLACKPINK: The First Female K-Pop Group to Perform at Coachella
Ever since their debut in 2016, BLACKPINK has steadily become one of the most popular K-pop acts of all time
BLACKPINK is continuing to make history.
When the group takes the stage at Coachella on Friday, they’ll become the first female K-pop act to perform at the music festival in it’s 20-year history.
Those who can’t make it out to the desert to witness the big performance in person are in luck, too. For the first time ever, YouTube will broadcast BLACKPINK’s set live from the festival on New York City’s iconic Times Square big screen.
Here’s everything to know about K-pop’s rising girl-gang before they take over Coachella and beyond.
They’re one of the most successful female Korean acts ever.
BLACKPINK dropped their first two songs — “Boombayah” and “Whistle” — two years ago and have steadily become one of the most popular K-pop acts of all time. Their single, “Ddu-Du, Ddu-Du,” debuted at no. 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in June, making them the highest-charting female K-pop act ever in the U.S. Then on April 4, the music video for their latest single, “Kill This Love,” became the most-watched music video in a 24 hour period in YouTube history, clocking in with 56.7 million views and surpassing the record held by Ariana Grande’s “Thank u, Next.” Just three days later, the video broke another record when it became the faster music video to hit 100 million views on the platform.
“Kill This Love” fronts a newly-released EP of the same name released on April 5, and it follows the release of their nine-song first album, BLACKPINK in Your Area. Signed to YG Entertainment, BLACKPINK is the company’s first girl group since 2009.
The group is made up of four members.
Unlike many female K-pop groups that have six to nine members, BLACKPINK consists of four — Jennie, Rosé, Lisa and Jisoo. All of the girls sing, but Jennie and Lisa also serve as the group’s rappers.
Jennie (full name: Jennie Kim), 23, was born in South Korea and spent six years training in YG Entertainment’s trainee system. In the system, aspiring pop idols audition with entertainment agencies in hopes of becoming trainees and debuting as an artist one day. After becoming BLACKPINK’s first member in 2016, Jennie has since released a solo track, titled “Solo.” Then in June 2018, she became Chanel Korea’s ambassador.
Rosé (full name: Park Chaeyoung), 22, is the main singer of BLACKPINK and was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia. In Australia, she passed the audition for YG Entertainment in 2012 and went to Korea for training. Fluent in English, Rosé frequently covers both English and Korean songs and also plays the guitar and piano.
Lisa (full name: Lalisa/Pranpriya Manoban), 22, is the youngest member of the group and known as the main dancer. Born and raised in Thailand, Lisa speaks Thai, Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese. Lisa was a part of a dance crew when she was younger and moved to South Korea after a successful audition for the trainee program in 2010.
Jisoo (full name: Kim Jisoo), 24, is the oldest member of the group and is known for her quirky sense of humor. Although she is the only member of the group who doesn’t speak English fluently, she is fluent in Korean, Japanese and Chinese.
Their name represents duality.
When BLACKPINK made their debut, YG Entertainment revealed in a statement that the group’s name is meant to contrast the common association of femininity with the color pink.
“The meaning of BLACKPINK aims to contradict the common perception of the color pink,” the statement read. “Pink is commonly used to portray prettiness, but BLACKPINK actually means to say that ‘Pretty isn’t everything.’ It also symbolizes that they are a team that encompasses not only beauty, but also great talent.”
Their fans also have a special name.
BLACKPINK’s fans go by the name of “Blinks,” which is simply a combination of the first two letters and last three letters of their group name. On BLACKPINK’s Instagram page, they have almost 17 million followers.
They have their own television show.
Fans hoping to get some insight on the life of BLACKPINK’s members can look no further than their reality series, BLACKPINK House. The 12-episode series is available to watch on YouTube and follows the foursome as they do everyday stuff like baking macaroons together.
After Coachella, BLACKPINK will continue on the North American, European, and Australian legs of their first world tour.
