Camila Cabello and Fifth Harmony 'Hadn't Gotten Along' — 'It Was Only a Matter of Time' Until She Went Solo: Sources

"Camila never made it a secret she planned to do her own thing eventually," says an insider of the singer's departure from the girl group

Camila Cabello is the first “Miss Movin’ On” from Fifth Harmony, but sources say her exit from the girl group shouldn’t come as a surprise.

“They hadn’t gotten along,” an insider tells PEOPLE. “Camila never made it a secret she planned to do her own thing eventually.”

Seconds an industry source: “I don’t think anyone is surprised from our side. Camila has been a pioneer and has really gone out there and had some great collaborations. We knew it was only a matter of time.”

However, a third source maintains there is no bad blood between Cabello, 19, and her former bandmates — Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane and Lauren Jauregui — over her solo pursuits.

“That was never their issue because they all have solo projects in the works,” says the third source, who confirms the four remaining members of the group “found out from [Cabello’s] representatives, not her.” “The girls will be making huge announcements for the group and their solo endeavors in January.”

Reps for Cabello did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Shortly after performing at the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in Miami on Sunday night, the girl group took to social media to announce Cabello’s departure.

“After 4 and a half years of being together, we have been informed via her representatives that Camila has decided to leave Fifth Harmony. We wish her well,” they wrote in a post uploaded to their official Twitter account at midnight Monday.

“We are excited to announce that we will be moving forward with the four of us,” the statement continued. “We are four strong, committed women who will continue with Fifth Harmony as well as our solo endeavors. We are excited for our future, and we can’t wait for what the new year brings.”

Simon Cowell first assembled the quintet during the second season of The X Factor in 2012 and placed third in the Fox reality singing competition, later signing a record deal with the music mogul.

Since their TV breakout, Fifth Harmony found success with a slew of singles, from “Bo$$” and “Sledgehammer” to “Worth It” and this summer smash hit “Work from Home,” for which they one the Collab of the Year title at the American Music Awards last month.

In the past year, Cabello started her foray into solo stardom, collaborating with pop and rap peers: Last year, she and rumored love interest Shawn Mendes released their duet “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” then in October, she and Machine Gun Kelly dropped their rap-sung track “Bad Things.”
