Britney Spears‘s father’s health crisis has affected her own well-being.

On Wednesday, a source told PEOPLE the pop icon, 37, checked into a facility for “all-encompassing wellness treatment.” Her father, Jamie, 66, suffered a ruptured colon in November 2018, and his ongoing struggles have taken a toll on Spears.

“Her dad being sick has just been so rough for her,” an insider tells PEOPLE of the singer, who shares sons Sean Preston, 13, and Jayden James, 12, with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

“Britney hasn’t been eating well, not working out and is constantly upset,” the insider adds of Spears. “As a mom, she knows she has to get better. She wanted to get help so she can find ways to cope better. This is what she is getting help with right now.”

In January, Spears — who has been linked to her model and trainer boyfriend Sam Asghari, 25, since 2016 — announced that she would be taking an indefinite break from work and postponed her much-anticipated Domination Las Vegas residency to support her father and focus on her family.

“Before he got sick, Britney was doing extremely well. But worrying about her dad has made her feel physically ill,” the insider adds. “She was very happy with her life. Her boys are amazing, she is very happy with Sam and she has enjoyed connecting with fans during her Las Vegas shows.”

Spears’s father had emergency surgery for his ruptured colon last fall, then recently underwent a second surgery.

On Wednesday, Spears alluded to taking some time off when she posted an empowering quote — “Fall in love with taking care of yourself, mind, body, spirit” — to her Instagram, along with the caption: “We all need to take time for a little ‘me time’ :).”

At the time, a source close to the Spears family told PEOPLE that after caring for her father, “Britney just needed to focus on herself” by seeking treatment.

“Her dad being sick has taken a toll on her,” the family source added. “He nearly died and actually had another surgery a few weeks ago. He’s not doing well. They’re so close and it has been a lot. There is nothing dramatic going on with her — she just realized she needs to make sure to take time to care for herself.”
