Following his split from girlfriend Sami Miré, Zac Efron is moving on by simply focusing on what makes him happy – and he thinks you should do the same.

“Try and find what really motivates you, find what you love, and do your best to keep searching for that thing,” Efron, 28, said of what keeps him happy at the Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising press day in Los Angeles on Sunday. “Work hard when you find it.”

Efron said one of the keys to happiness is learning to overcome fears and seize new opportunities.

“Every time I find myself afraid of anything, or scared to do something, and that is what is going to prevent me from doing it, usually that is when I try and do it, because usually that is when I find that it was something that I needed to do,” he explained. “So if there is something that you are afraid of doing in life that could lead to something, or an opportunity that you’re afraid of or nervous of, go for it.”

Efron and Miré began dating in 2014, but PEOPLE confirmed that the pair called it quits just months ahead of their two-year anniversary.

After their decision to part ways, Efron removed all photos of Miré from his social media accounts and stopped following her on both Instagram and Twitter.

Just two days after their split, Miré stepped out with DJ Alex Andre, and a source confirms to PEOPLE that the two are dating.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, in which Efron’s insanely ripped frat-boy character returns to help Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne try to get rid of a sorority that moves next door, hits theaters May 20.
