The official first trailer for the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse has arrived, and it shows perhaps the most evil and powerful mutant of them all.

The latest installment of the popular franchise takes place nearly a decade after the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, when Apocalypse – an ancient Egyptian being believed to be the world’s first mutant, and played by Oscar Isaac – rises from his tomb.

“Ever since the world found out about mutants, there have been secret societies who see them as some kind of second coming or sign of God,” Moira MacTaggert tells Professor Charles Xavier and Havok in the trailer. “They believe that tens of thousands of years ago, an ancient being was born. The world’s first …”

“Mutant,” Professor X says, jumping in.

True to the tale, Apocalypse recruits Magneto, Psylocke, Storm and Angel to help bring another mutant into the fold: Professor X himself.

And with Apocalypse’s ability to control any mutant, taking him down will prove no easy task for the X-Men.

“Everything they’ve built will fall, and from the ashes of their world, we’ll build a better one,” Apocalypse intones in the trailer.

Starring Michael Fassbender, Olivia Munn, Rose Byrne, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and more, X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27, 2016.
