“What’s your damage?”

It’s hard to imagine the 1988 cult-favorite Heathers without Winona Ryder starring as Veronica, but it turns out, filmmakers weren’t immediately sold on her playing the cynical brunette. The actress, 44, revealed that she nearly missed out on the lead role.

“I was not the first choice for Veronica in Heathers,” she told Tavi Gevinson in a feature for Interview. “I auditioned and they were like, ‘Oh, thanks.’ And I went to the Beverly Center to Macy’s and had them do a makeover on me. I went back because I kind of knew that they thought I wasn’t pretty enough.”

So who almost stole the role?

“They were trying to get Jennifer Connelly,” she admitted.

Though Ryder eventually managed to land the part, Connelly wasn’t the only actress she found herself competing with. Ryder also revealed that she lost several roles to another famous actress, Martha Plimpton. She said she auditioned for at least three different roles that ended up going to Raising Hope star.

“I really didn’t foresee me having any type of career as a leading lady at all because it was just blonds. I just wasn’t the type – I was told that by casting directors,” she said. I auditioned for Running on Empty and The Mosquito Coast and Martha Plimpton was just killing me.”

“And deservedly so,” she continued. “She was so amazing and totally unusual too. She’s brilliant and had such an interesting look.”
