Vivica A. Fox, who is reprising her role as Jasmine in Independence Day: Resurgence, tells PEOPLE she has the best memories of making the original film 20 years earlier.

“I’ll never forget getting the call that I got the part. I was on a soap opera The Young and the Restless and this was a huge movie. I was running around my little condo in Inglewood, California in my pajamas screaming, ‘I got it! I got it!’ ”

Fox, 51, also recalls her time working with Will Smith who had just begun dating his wife of 19 years Jada Pinkett Smith.

“They were head over heels in love,” Fox tells PEOPLE. “But I was like ‘Honey, I got to kiss your man, so don’t be tripping,’ And she said ‘Girl dive on in, just load up on that Binaca.’ ”

Luckily, the smooch was a success and the pair ended up taking home the Best Kiss Award at the MTV Movie Awards.

It also caused no drama between Jada and Fox. She still considers the Smiths close friends. “They throw the best parties,” she says.

Fox’s friendship with the Smiths extends to the whole family, and the actress can’t believe how quickly Will and Jada’s children, Jaden, 17, and Willow, 15, have grown up.

“It is so amazing to watch. It’s like, you were four and now you are at the Met Gala, oh my God!”

Independence Day: Resurgence is now in theaters.
