Troian Bellisario is giving Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet a new twist.

The Pretty Little Liars actress headlines a new short film titled Still a Rose, which reimagines the story of Romeo and Juliet through the eyes of four different couples, including same-sex ones.

Bellisario, 29, takes on the role of Juliet – but she’s not the only one, nor does she call from the balcony to just one person playing Romeo. Instead, the film intertwines the stories of four star-crossed lovers, adding a new sense of diversity and sexual inclusiveness to the classic tale.

This idea of interchangeable gender and sexuality within the film is displayed as the two same-sex couples embrace for a loving moment, with Bellisario kissing her female Romeo.

Bellisario stars alongside Brandon Crowder, Tinuke Oyefule, and Will Branske, with the four discrete couplings playing out as: male Romeo/female Juliet, male Juliet/female Romeo, male Romeo/male Juliet and female Romeo/female Juliet.

Still a Rose has been making the rounds of the festival circuit, unspooling at NewFest – New York’s LGBT Film Festival – throughout the summer. The film will screen in New York City on Oct. 25.
