Do you have to be a space geek to sign up for a Ridley Scott epic about Mars? Not at all, says Donald Glover, one of the stars of The Martian – though it might come in handy.

“I knew a little about orbit, but not enough to save anyone,” Glover tells PEOPLE exclusively at the 40th Toronto International Film Festival, sitting next to costar Sean Bean.

The film stars Matt Damon as a botanist on a mission to Mars who gets left behind after a brutal windstorm. It opened to glowing reviews, making The Martian one of the early hits of the festival.

But even though he plays a NASA scientist, Glover’s experience on the film didn’t exactly prepare him for a rescue mission.

“[If you’re lost in space], call me to let me know. It would be kind of cool that I was the first person you contacted,” he adds, “but definitely not to get help.”
