He’s played a villain battling Batman, and a hero named Mad Max, but in the new film Legend Tom Hardy plays two bad guys terrifyingly well.

The British actor takes on the dual roles of the Kray brothers – real-life gangsters who ruled London’s underworld in the 1950s and ’60s.

In a new trailer for the film, directed by L.A. Confidential‘s Brian Helgelund, Hardy, 37, plays twins Reggie (“the gangster prince of the East End”) and Ronnie (“a one-man mob”), who ran nightclubs that saw them rubbing shoulders with celebrities while they conducted criminal activities including racketeering and murder.

Legend also stars Chazz Palminteri, David Thewlis, Emily Browning and Taron Egerton and is due out Oct. 2.
