Todrick Hall is giving fans and intimate look into his life -- and his rise to fame
Todrick Hall is giving fans an intimate look into his life — and his rise to fame.
The 32-year-old singer and actor documented the making of his visual album Straight Outta Oz in Behind the Curtain: Todrick Hall. The documentary, directed by Katherine Fairfax Wright (Call Me Kuchu) offers a look into his hectic schedule and most important relationships, like his mom.
“I am so excited to be sharing this beautiful, vulnerable, heartwarming film with my family, friends and most of all my fans,” Hall tells PEOPLE. “I have spent my YouTube career encouraging others and trying to be a trailblazer for underdogs and artists with no provided platform to be artistic. Along with Katherine’s creative storytelling, the camera became a mirror for me to understand what I’m truly capable of and how my fans see me.”
Hall, who often judges on RuPaul’s Drag Race, got his start on season 9 of American Idol in 2010 and made his Broadway debut in Kinky Boots in late 2016 — right after he released his visual album Straight Outta Oz, which uses imagery from The Wizard of Oz to explore Hall’s own journey. The documentary follows his path in recording the album.
“I’m nervous for people to know me in a completely unedited way, but excited to introduce them to the real Todrick from Plainview, Texas. After all…he is truly the man behind the curtain,” he says.
Ahead its release, Hall will be hosting a special preview screening and conversation at New York’s IFC Center on Dec. 6. Fans will also have the chance to watch the documentary with Hall at Dallas’ Texas Theatre on Dec. 13, where he will take part in a post-screening Q&A.
Behind the Curtain: Todrick Hall made its debut at the SXSW Film Festival and is available on digital platforms starting Dec. 12.
