Not only did actor Tim Curry receive the lifetime achievement award at the Actors Fund Tony Awards Viewing Party on Sunday, but he also took part in a mini-reunion that was 33 years in the making.

At the event, Curry, 69, caught up with Alieen Quinn, who played the titular heroine in Annie, for the first time since they acted together in the 1982 film.

“It was amazing,” Quinn, 43, told PEOPLE of their reunion. “Tim was the one [costar] I hadn’t seen in 30 years. It was very emotional because what people don’t realize about him is how kind he is in real life.”

Despite his suffering a stroke two years ago, Quinn saw a lot of the same charm Curry had when they worked together.

“When I came up to him, I was like, ‘Tim, do you remember this face?’ And he said, ‘Of course I do!’ and he had kind of this wry smile,” says Quinn, who just released the album Spin Me with her band Aileen Quinn and the Leapin’ Lizards. “He has that twinkle in his eye as always. Even though it’s not quite the same as 30 years ago because he’s older now, we had a very nice moment.”

The Broadway vet was impressed by Curry’s perseverance and positivity.

“The fact that he even came out that night to receive the award says a lot,” she says. “He’s fighting the good fight. He’s hanging in there. He came, he talked to a bunch of people, he got his award. He’s a real fighter in true Annie spirit!”
