Ryan Gosling sees a kindred spirit in Emma Stone.

The pair reunite for the third time in the romantic musical La La Land – which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday to standing ovations from the crowd.

So what’s the makes Gosling and Stone the perfect onscreen match?

“I like working with Emma because I think she’s secretly Canadian,” the London, Canada, native joked. “That’s why we get along so well – she’s wildly apologetic for no reason.”

“Sorry about that,” Stone quipped in response.

In La La Land, Gosling, 35, portrays a dedicated jazz musician named Sebastian who falls for aspiring actress Mia (Stone). Their relationship is tested as their careers evolve.

Both Stone and Gosling show off their dancing and singing chops for their roles.

“We rehearsed for about three months for it,” Stone said of preparing for the musical. “A lot of dancing, a lot of singing. We had to learn to tap and ballroom dance, which was wonderful.”

The film is already earning praise for its stars: Stone won the Volpi Cup for best actress at the 73rd Venice Film Festival for her turn as Mia.

La La Land hits theaters on Dec. 12.
