From Porgs to People: Meet All the New Characters to Join the Star Wars Galaxy in The Last Jedi
Vice Admiral Holdo
Laura Dern joins the galaxy as Resistance leader Vice Admiral Holda.
Her character is one of the most mysterious of the newcomers in the galaxy. "I am allowed to tell you that I arrived to shake up the Resistance," she says in PEOPLE's new special issue Star Wars: The Ultimate Guide to the Last Jedi. "And my hair is a fantastic color!"
Gamblers in the city of Canto Bight are an homage to the first Star Wars but also an evolution. "We love the legacy characters," says creature supervisor Neal Scanlan. "But this is exciting new territory."
"The Force Awakens was about understanding the world of Star Wars," says Scanlan. "For Last Jedi, we felt more confident."
Kelly Marie Tran joins the gang of rebels as Rose Tico, a Resistance maintenance leader. "Rose has an unlikely hero's journey," says Tran. "She gets pulled into this adventure -- and off it goes.
More gamblers from the city of Canto Bight featured in The Last Jedi.
The malevolent new BB-9E, nicknamed BB-Hate, sports a look that "echoes '50s automobiles but with a bit of evilness," says Scanlan.
Benicio Del Toro joins the saga as an enigmatic and unscrupulous codebreaker. "I don't know if he's a villain," the actor told Entertainment Weekly of his character. "People are saying that, but it's like they read a different script than I read."
Poe Dameron's wingman.
The nun-like Caretakers live on Luke Skywalker's island.
These scene-stealers, inquisitive avians who live on Luke's planet, popped out of the mind of writer-director Rian Johnson. "The idea was they are sort of puffins, crossed with seals, crossed with sort of maybe a pug dog."
The Last Jedi's first breakout characters stand about 10 in. tall.
