Shazam! Star Zachary Levi to Host the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards
Zachary Levi is taking on the MTV Movie & TV Awards on June 17
The MTV Movie & TV Awards will have a superhero as host.
Shazam! star Zachary Levi has been tapped to host the show this year, which recently expanded to include TV categories. The ceremony will air Monday, June 17 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
Levy follows a long list of high-profile hosts, including Tiffany Haddish, Adam Devine, Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, Amy Schumer, Conan O’Brien, Rebel Wilson, Russell Brand, Jason Sudeikis and Andy Samberg.
The actor is currently starring in Shazam! as the superhero the main character turns into every time he says the hero’s name.
“Ever since I was a little kid, I dreamt about being a superhero,” Levi, 38, recently told PEOPLE. “That enthusiasm that you see me play in the movie, a lot of that is just my own natural enthusiasm because I was checking off bucket list item after bucket list item.”
While he’d always been ready mentally, getting into shape to play an immortal man who can lift a bus took more work.
“I got the job and I was in the gym 5-6 days a week,” Levi says. “When I was trying to build mass, you’ve got to eat a lot of calories, 3,500-3,700 calories a day. And they have to be really clean calories, they can’t just be Häagen-Dazs!”
Acting alongside teenagers like Jack Dylan Grazer and Asher Angel — who plays the teenager version of Shazam — helped Levi get in the mindset to play a 14-year-old at heart.
“They really did help me to remember over and over again that when you’re 14, you have no responsibilities and you can therefore feel much freer to be silly,” the Chuck actor says. “And we forget that when we grow up.”
Shazam! is in theaters now. The 2019 categories and nominees will be announced in the coming weeks.
