Step aside, gentlemen – there’s a woman in charge now.

Sela Ward portrays the Commander-in-Chief in Independence Day: Resurgence, and the 59-year-old actress tells PEOPLE she gives her gig as President Lanford two thumbs-up.

“It was awesome getting to play the first female President of the United States,” Ward tells PEOPLE. “She s strong, decisive and not afraid to kick ass!”

The sequel, set to hit theaters on June 26 of next year, is a follow-up to the classic that first hit theaters nearly 20 years ago – and the CSI: NY veteran says there are many similarities to the first science-fiction film.

“The film has great humor, like the first one, with lots of action and mind-blowing special effects,” she says.
