There are worse things in life than getting an important call while hiking in Ireland.

Lady Bird‘s Saoirse Ronan was in her native country sightseeing with a friend on Monday when she couldn’t figure out why her phone wouldn’t stop ringing — and then realized the 2018 Golden Globe nominations were out.

“I actually forgot about it today because I was just on a different time zone and I was up and out of the house,” Ronan, 23, tells PEOPLE. “I had a friend over and we went to this beautiful site called Glendalough, which is a monastic site and there’s a beautiful lake and mountains. My bag just started to vibrate nonstop and I was like ‘What’s going on?’ And then I saw a bunch of missed calls from my publicist and I was like, ‘Oh s—, they’re out today!'”

The now three-time Golden Globe nominee says she actually preferred finding out that way. “It was actually quite nice cause it meant I wasn’t thinking about it too much. It was such a lovely, pleasant surprise when I heard. It’s very exciting!” she says.

Ronan was nominated for the first time in 2008 for her role in Atonement and then again in 2016 for Brooklyn. But when it came time to tell her mom about the happy news, Ronan had another bout of miscommunication.

“I called my mom and she didn’t answer!” Ronan says with a laugh. “She called me back and was like, ‘The one time I didn’t answer the phone!’ Because no matter what time of the day she always answers, and the one time I tried to get her because of the Golden Globe nomination she didn’t. I’m trying to persuade her to be my plus one in January.”

Now a veteran of the award circuit cycle, Ronan is looking forward to celebrating the night of the show with her cast and Call Me By Your Name‘s Timothee Chalamet, who also appears in Lady Bird.

“Anytime it’s happened it’s been for a film that I cared very deeply about and worked hard on. Whether you win or lose, it’s just always a lovely excuse to celebrate the hard work that you’ve done, with [director] Greta [Gerwig]. And Timothee is nominated too so it’s going to be really nice to share it with them!”

Seth Meyers is set to host the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards, airing live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel’s Grand Ballroom on Jan. 7 on NBC.
