Rose McGowan Reveals She Had an Abortion After Birth Control Failed: 'I Am Not Ashamed'
Rose McGowan got personal on Twitter about her previously undisclosed abortion
Rose McGowan is revealing she had an abortion and opening up about her difficult decision.
On Friday, the actress, 45, replied to a tweet sharing the statistic that “1 in 4 women has an abortion by age 45,” sharing, “I have had an abortion and I support this message.”
“I am not ashamed, nor should you be,” she adds. “That 60% of those who choose to have abortions are already mothers says a lot — they understand more than anyone. I was on birth control and it failed. I realized I could not bring a child into my world and simultaneously change the world.
“I do not regret my decision and it was not made lightly. If you do not want an abortion, don’t get one. My body, my choice, my life. Have you had to make a choice? Let’s talk and use hashtag #HonestAbortion.”
McGowan doesn’t specify when the abortion took place.

A rep for the actress did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
McGowan has emerged as a prominent voice in the #MeToo movement after she was one of the first women to speak out in October 2017 when Harvey Weinstein’s decades of alleged sexual misconduct and assault broke in The New York Times and The New Yorker. McGowan claims Weinstein sexually assaulted her in 1997.
Weinstein has since been accused by over 60 women of various forms of sexual assault and misconduct. The former movie mogul, 66, has denied the allegations of nonconsensual sex and retaliation.
