With two films set to be screened at Cannes this year, it’s safe to say Robert Pattinson has officially left his sparkly vampire past far behind him.

The trailer for one of those movies, The Rover, was released Thursday, and it finds the Twilight actor bloodied and desperate in post-apocalyptic Australia.

A mysterious criminal named Eric (Guy Pearce) drags Pattinson’s Reynolds around the dusty, barren landscape, searching for Reynold’s brother and his rival gang. The music is eerie, the cinematography dark and the tone ominous. But we’re treated to a a few seconds of Pattinson shirtless, so it seems the scary scenes are worth the stress.

The trailer ends with a bang – literally – as Eric fires a gun and Reynolds contemplates God’s love. Viewers will have to wait to see how the violent family drama plays out when The Rover premieres at Cannes in May and hits theaters stateside June 20.
