While the Internet was abuzz with speculation over Renée Zellweger‘s different appearance after she hit the red carpet in October 2014, the star says she decidedly ignored the conversation.

Zellweger told Entertainment Weekly in the magazine’s new cover story that she focused on the positive support she received from fans rather than the scrutiny of her looks.

“All I know is that people were sending support, which means that I must have needed it,” she said. “When people ask me, ‘How did that feel?’ I’ll say, ‘I don’t know.’ ”

Last October, Zellweger told PEOPLE she was “glad” people thought she looked different.

She continued, “I’m living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I’m thrilled that perhaps it shows.”

The Oscar winner noted, however, that public interest in her appearance was “silly,” a sentiment she echoed in EW.

“I know it sounds pretty unlikely that a person might be able to keep herself clear of those words or of that experience, but I have and it takes effort. But I have succeeded,” the 46-year-old told the magazine. “What good comes from knowing that something like that has happened? Less fear.”

The Bridget Jones’s Baby actress, who is joined by her castmates on EW‘s cover, also dished on the highly anticipated third film in the popular Bridget Jones’s Diary franchise.

The movie is Zellweger’s second project since 2010, and there’s a reason she chose it for her return to the big screen.

“I like that she tells what it’s like to be a woman in these really relatable situations,” she saidof her famous character. “It’s so right to tell a story about Bridget in this stage of her life.”
