Tyler Perry played the former Secretary of State in the Oscar-nominated film

Tyler Perry just revealed which 2018 performance impressed him the most — and how he prepared for his own.

Perry, 49, spoke to PeopleTV for the Red Carpet Live special on the Academy Awards red carpet Sunday, and shared that his favorite performance of the year was from a costar — Christian Bale in Vice.

“I know this is going to sound very self-serving, but Vice,” Perry said. “Looking at Christian Bale and [director] Adam McKay.”

Bale played former Vice President Dick Cheney in Vice, undergoing a vast physical transformation that involved gaining 40 pounds. Perry played former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

When asked how he prepared to take on the daunting role of Powell, Perry said: “I called him and asked if it was okay!”

“But listen, I love A Star Is Born, I love Bohemian Rhapsody,” Perry added. “It’s gonna be a really interesting night tonight. Black Panther — it’s going to be wonderful. So I’m all in. I’m all in.”

The 91st Academy Awards are broadcasting live from Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT on ABC.
