Noomi Rapace has landed the role of legendary opera singer Maria Callas, and if this first-look photo of the actress in character is any indication, moviegoers’ eyes and ears will be in for a treat.
Rapace will play the world-famous soprano in the biopic Callas, which will focus on the opera diva’s nearly two-decade love affair with Aristotle Onassis.
In a sneak-peek photo from the movie, Rapace, 35 – who has starred in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo saga and Prometheus – strikes Callas’ iconic pose, eyes piercing the camera and her hands dramatically framing her famous face and mouth.
Whale Rider filmmaker Niki Caro is attached to direct Callas, from a screenplay she adapted from Alfonso Signorini’s biography Too Proud, Too Fragile.
The film will debut at the Cannes Film Festival, which gets underway Wednesday.
