Jeremy Renner is known for being a scene-stealer – and now it looks like he might walk away with a whole franchise.

The actor, best known for his Oscar-nominated role in The Hurt Locker, was cast in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol with the intention of possibly taking over for Tom Cruise.

“It’s a franchise to potentially take over,” Renner told MTV News. “I can’t predict the future and what they want, but that’s certainly the idea.”

Renner, 39, wouldn’t elaborate as to whether the passing of the torch would take place in Ghost Protocol or a future film.

“I can’t really go into the details of the script, because that’s still evolving,” he said. “It’s Tom’s baby. He’s the engine behind the thing. What happens after that, we’ll see.”
