Before you travel back to a galaxy far far way in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, get to know film’s stars and their original characters.

Young Padawans Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac and John Boyega caught up with PEOPLE and EW at the recent Star Wars celebration in California, and gave a sneak peak at their roles.

The force is strong in these ones.

Daisy Ridley as Rey
The 23-year-old London born newcomer says her character, Rey, lives on “the desert planet Jakku” and is “a scavenger in a ship graveyard.” Ridley describes Rey as “completely self sufficient,” adding that she’s, “just in it for herself and very solitary.” That is of course until she meets Boyega’s character, Finn, “and an adventure begins.”

John Boyega as Finn
Boyega, another 23-year-old Brit, first came onto the scene in the 2011 sci-fi flick, Attack the Block – but now he’s headed to the dark side. His character, Finn, is a Stormtrooper, though maybe not such a bad one. Boyega says his character begins the film “in incredible danger, and the way he decides to react to this danger changes his life.” The incident “launches him into the Star Wars universe in a very unique way.”

Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron
The Guatemalan born actor, 36, who’s also working on the X-Men: Apocalypse film, says that when his character meets Boyega’s, “their fates are forever intertwined.” According to Isaac, Dameron is “sent on a mission by a certain princess” – perhaps he is her only hope? Either way, this princess seems to have made a good choice, because Isaac brags that Dameron is “the best frickin’ pilot in the galaxy.”
