While Liam Neeson is off rescuing his onscreen loved ones from the bad guys, his real-life family is in the capable hands of his Oscar-winning mother-in-law, Vanessa Redgrave.

“It’s always a balance,” Neeson, 62, tells PEOPLE, of raising his two sons, Michael, 19, and Daniel, 17, as a busy actor and single dad.

Fortunately, Neeson says, “I have a great support team [and] if I’m away on a project, my mother-in-law moves in.”

Redgrave, 77, has been heavily involved in raising her grandchildren, especially after her daughter, Neeson’s late wife, Natasha Richardson, passed away after a tragic skiing accident in 2009.

But adjusting their lifestyle is nothing new for his sons. The Taken actor says his children have been working around his schedule since birth.

“One of them was born on location, so they’re used to Dad being away for long periods of time,” Neeson says. “So far, it’s worked out okay they’re not damaged.”

Which is a good thing because Neeson has no intention of slowing down. “I m very fortunate to get to play these characters at this stage of my life,” he says. “I love doing it, and I ll keep doing it as long as they keep sending me these scripts.”
