Why Liam Hemsworth Felt Participating in the America's Cup Practice Race Was 'Emasculating'
The Independence Day: Resurgence star was the "sixth man" on a practice run for the upcoming race
It’s not often people put the word “emasculating” in the same sentence as Liam Hemsworth, but the Independence Day: Resurgence star tells PEOPLE his latest water adventure made him feel less than manly.
Hemsworth was chosen as the “sixth man” on Britain s America s Cup team, Land Rover BAR, in New York City on Friday as they prepare to race in the Louis Vuitton America s Cup World Series beginning on Saturday.
“It was pretty incredible,” Hemsworth told PEOPLE after completing the morning race on a windy and rainy day on the water. “In a way, a little emasculating, actually, because basically I’m just sitting there holding onto a net.”
Game of Thrones‘s Alfie Allen also did a practice round with the Land Rover team.
Hemsworth says he gained a new perspective on the hard work that goes into racing.
“I have so much more respect after having seen it first-hand what these guys do because it’s incredible – the coordination between them, the way they communicate – it’s all very short and sharp and loud and to the point but just how they’re all working together simultaneously, it’s amazing to see,” he says.
Though the movie star says he wasn’t nervous before getting on the boat, he started to feel uneasy when they were warming up.
“Right before the race when they have to circle until the race actually starts, they do this circling thing and there’s sort of a weird, tense vibe in the air where all the boats are in close proximity and trying to find their spot in the race,” he explains. “And that’s when my mind started playing tricks on me, wondering whether something was going to hit me in the head or something like that.”
When asked about his own future plans, Hemsworth told Extra that starting a family is not currently one of his priorities.
“I’m sure one day I’ll go down that road and it will feel right,” he says. “For now, I feel very young and feel like I have a lot of things to do I will leave that to later on in life.”
