Kristen Stewart is about to get roped into a major scam.
In a PEOPLE exclusive clip of Justin Kelly’s upcoming film JT LeRoy, Stewart, 29, portrays Savannah Knoop, a young woman who poses as a popular author while her sister-in-law writes the material.
“Savannah, Geoffrey’s baby sister! Look at this creature. Just as you said,” Laura tells Geoffrey as she cradles Savannah’s face in her hands.
Looking uncomfortable, Savannah remains silent as she smiles and sips her beer.
In 2006, Albert shocked the literary world and Hollywood alike when she revealed that she was the person behind the beloved and celebrated young author – supposedly an HIV-positive transgender ex-prostitute who chronicled their troubled upbringing in the novel Sarah and The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things: Stories.
“I understand people feeling hurt and they feel I took their time, but this was never a joke for me,” Albert told PEOPLE in 2016. “All I can say is when JT felt pain and felt suicidal, that was real for me.”
JT skyrocketed to fame and was labeled an “it boy” among Hollywood’s elite, befriending the likes of Courtney Love, Winona Ryder and more. Albert’s sister-in-law would meet celebrities at Hollywood events, and Albert would step in when JT talked to them on the phone.
The film stars Diane Kruger as Eva, an actress who championed LeRoy and made a film based on one of his books that went on to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Love, who was one of the stars who thought she’d met the real LeRoy, also stars in the film.
JT LeRoy is in theaters and on VOD and Digital HD on April 26.
