There’s no such thing as a perfect relationship – and even one of Hollywood’s cutest couples, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, know that to be true.

Bell, 35, got candid when speaking about the ups and downs in her nearly decade-long relationship with Shepard, 40, admitting that trekking the road to happiness wasn’t always easy.

“Our relationship wasn’t perfect,” Bell told Entertainment Tonight. “We had a couple years of fighting and of growing pains and hating each other, then loving each other and going to couples therapy and we worked it out … We earned each other.”

Bell and Shepard tied the knot in 2013 after dating for nearly six years. Together they have two daughters, Lincoln, 2, and Delta, 11 months.

The Frozen star has always been forthright about how much couples therapy has helped her learn to better connect with Shepard.

“Therapy is not something to be embarrassed about,” she told Good Housekeeping. “I don’t mind advertising a healthy marriage. I’m trying, just like everyone else.”

All the hard work has certainly paid off. In fact, the two are even working together on a new film. Shepard is directing Bell in the movie adaptation of the television series CHiPs. Bell said it was an easy decision to work with her husband because of the trust they’ve built.

“I trust him implicitly with my life, my career, my children,” she told ET.

But strengthening their bond isn’t the only benefit of working together – for Shepard at least. He might have had ulterior motives when he cast his wife for the part.

“I mean he wrote this role on CHiPs for me and I’m in a bathing suit the entire movie, and I just said, ‘All right,’ ” Bell quipped.
